The big controversy of Romans 7 is whether or not Paul’s discussion of his struggle with sin refers to his present state in Christ or prior to his finding Christ. This controversy rages especially when we don’t understand the shape of the war against sin we still face in Christ. The sin remains in our flesh, but we have truly received and been renewed by the Spirit of the Lord in Christ. This chapter can be a great source of encouragement as it allows us to more completely understand the present reality of our Christian life at war with sin.
